Further Mathmatics
This course is taken in the second year by some students who have usually gained grade A at AS level mathematics, and who are very interested in increasing their mathematical base. It is particularly useful to students in their first year engineering course, as the material found in the 3 extra modules studied will be studied in the first year at any university.
The emphasis is again on Pure mathematics and Mechanics, with students accelerated through the course by having more than one mathematics lesson per day.
| Course Structure | ||
| Module 1: FP1 | Further inequalities, summation of series, complex numbers, numerical solution of equations, matrices and determinants, proof by induction. | |
| Module 2: FP2 | First and second order differential equations, further complex numbers, parametric equations of parabola and rectangular hyperbola, polar coordinates, Taylor's expansion. | |
| Module 3: M3 | Further kinematics of non-constant accelerations, elasticity, simple harmonic motion, circular motion, statics of rigid bodies. | |
