National Archery Championships (December 2009)
On Saturday 5th December I attended the National Junior Indoor Archery Championships at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. I had an early start to get the train on time but managed to catch up on sleep on the way there. This is the first tournament I have competed in since starting at Welbeck and, despite previously representing the country, I was worried the lack of training would show in my performance. Approximately 260 archers competed over the two days of competition. I was in the first session of the weekend so didn’t have the added pressure of having to beat a certain score. There are four main categories - girls Recurve, girls Compound, boys Recurve and boys Compound (Recurve and Compound are the different types of bows) and I competed in the Junior Ladies Compound section. All archers shot at targets at a distance of only 20 metres as it was an indoor competition, but Compound archers over the age of sixteen had to shoot at ‘three spot’ target faces (pictured below) instead of the normal target face for the round. On the three spot faces, if the arrow strays outside the six scoring ring it is classed as a miss and scores no points.
The session started smoothly, and although I was not up to the standard of previous years, I managed to get into a good rhythm of shooting and put in a decent score. It was great to meet up with people I hadn’t seen in a long time including several of my GB teammates and the national squad coaches. I finished up in 8th place and had a really enjoyable day of shooting.
