Examination Board: AQA (Website) Why study Physical Education?Physical Education, fitness and sport are fundamental parts of life in the Armed Forces. Studying the subject at A Level offers students the opportunity to experience and develop an interest in a variety of roles in sport such as performer, official or leader/coach at AS, and then to specialise in one role at A2. The content of the course addresses current contemporary topics in sport such as the impact of the use of ergongenic aids, technology, and the increasing commercialisation of sport. You will also gain an in depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology, the principles of training, and skill acquisition - all of which will be extremely useful in planning your own fitness programme. The practical element makes up 40% of the course, and you must choose ONE activity only for your practical assessment – and that is normally the one that you a re taking for your Major Sport on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. This allows you to get academic credit for all the hard work you will put into your sport in any case! A level PE is perfect for those of you with a strong and active interest in sport and allows you to get an academic qualification while developing what is a big part of your life anyway. The subject is fully recognised by all universities for matriculation purposes, and it must be emphasised that it is not essential to have studied PE at GCSE level to succeed. |

Departmental Staff
Mr Paul Walsh - Head of Sport A Head of PE for almost 20 years, Mr. Walsh has been involved in teaching A Level PE since its inception in 1990. In previous years two former students have received commendations from the Board for gaining marks in the top five nationally. Exercise Physiology and Skill Acquisition are specialisms, both inspired by a keen interest in fitness and strength training plus sports coaching. Formerly a national level badminton player and competitive powerlifter, rugby is now his major occupation. An RFU Level 4 Coach and Coach Educator, Paul was backs coach for the England Under 18 side from 2003 to 2006. He is also heavily involved in coaching a local club senior side at the moment, with the possibility of returning to work with representative sides next season.
Mrs Zoe Hawkins is a former head of PE who has taught in both the state and private sectors and her high standards have been recognised in a succession of Ofsted reports. Zoe gained a first class honours degree from Bedford College of Physical Education and it is here she developed an interest in the socio-cultural issues of sport. Zoe is a successful and committed netball coach at local and county level. A former chairperson of the Leicestershire Schools' Netball Association she has coached the county Under 14 and under 16 sides. Her school teams have achieved county success and have reached the National Schools' Netball Finals for the past 6 years and the National Track and Field Athletics Schools’ Cup on numerous occasions. Currently playing club netball, she has represented Derbyshire and Leicestershire. She also enjoys playing squash. Mrs Hawkins is also a Deputy House Mistress and lives on site.
