Examination Board: AQA (Website) Why study Geography?Geography is a popular and high achieving subject at Welbeck College. The new specification focuses on developing geographical skills that have clear military value, such as map reading, satellite image interpretation, statistics and investigations using ICT. The AS Geography is divided into two areas - Physical and Human Geography. In the Physical Geography the compulsory Rivers, Floods and Management unit relates to environments familiar to most, if not all, candidates and engages them in the study of the central role of water in landscape development and its management for human welfare purposes. The study of coastal environments covers physical processes as well as the themes of environmental impact, management, sustainability and citizenship. The Human Geography considers Population Change and Energy Issues which raise important questions which emphasise issues of contemporary relevance. Fieldwork visits are an integral part of the course. Recently, we have had day visits to the Toyota car factory and to the Peak District. We also have a residential course in North Wales. A2 Geography also consists of Physical and Human Geography options. The physical options include the study of environments that present a challenge to human occupation. We study plate tectonics and their associated hazards and also weather and climate and its associated hazards. The human options are of particular interest to students embarking upon a military officer's career. Development and globalisation, includes the roles of Newly Industrialising Countries and Trans-National Corporations. Contemporary conflict and challenge includes the geographical explanations for violence terrorism and war with particular reference to conflicts such as those in Darfur, the Middle East and Afghanistan. Also covered is the challenge of global poverty and the issue: 'no development without security, and no security without development'. Whilst useful, it is not necessary to have GCSE Geography to be successful at A-level Geography. Trips |
