Welbeck’s boarding facilities are outstanding. We have five purpose-built co-educational boarding houses named Alanbrooke, Nelson, Portland, Stirling and Trenchard. Each house can accommodate up to 70 students and is managed by two qualified house parents who take their ‘in loco parentis’ responsibilities very seriously.
We are very conscious that the majority of our students have never boarded before so our new students benefit from a carefully designed induction programme which ensures that their transition into boarding life is as smooth as possible. A team of upper sixth prefects and mentors are trained to work alongside the house staff to help new students settle quickly into the Welbeck way of life.
Our upper sixth students normally have a single study bedroom whilst the lower sixth share a room with two others which promotes social integration. Every study bedroom is very well equipped with en suite facilities and access to the College network. Every student is issued with a laptop which gives them access to our intranet and the internet which facilitates communications with home.
Students enjoy relaxing and socialising in their house common rooms where they can watch TV, play games or listen to music. Each house also has a laundry with a bank of washing machines and tumble driers – our students do most of their own washing and ironing, which is excellent preparation for university and military life.
Teenagers are renowned for their insatiable appetites, so each floor is equipped with a small kitchen which contains a microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge and freezer. Bread, jam, butter and milk are provided each evening to keep the students going between their evening meal and breakfast time.
A system of CCTV cameras and a 24 hour Military Guard Service constantly monitors the security of our campus. Access to the boarding houses is electronically controlled so as to only allow access to authorised persons. Gender separation within the houses is also controlled by electronic key fobs and an alarm system. Each study bedroom room can be locked and a personal safe is provided to ensure the security of personal valuables.
