Career Profile - Sub Lieutenant Ian Guild
"With family in the Royal Navy, I was from an early age aware of the opportunities available in the Service, and it was always in the back of my mind as a career option."
"At school, I quickly realised that engineering was the subject and career area that best suited me. I gathered industrial experience amongst civilian firms; however, I found it completely uninspiring. It dawned on me that unless I looked for something less mundane, in six years’ time I’d end up working in a dreary office in front of a computer screen. So I decided to have a go at joining the Navy."
"Within a couple of meetings with my local RN careers advisor I was ready to apply for the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB), the Navy equivalent to a job interview. The scheme I applied for was an Engineering Officer Bursary Entry, giving me financial support through university in return for me pledging to join up fully on graduation, and to stay for a minimum return of service. I passed the board and won an engineering bursary."
"I’m now in my third year of studying Engineering at Cambridge University. I have no regrets. The bursary payments make life a lot more comfortable, and I’ve taken up many of the opportunities available to sponsored RN undergraduates."
"I joined Cambridge University’s Royal Naval Unit (URNU), so from having virtually no knowledge and experience of basic naval skills, I’ve built up a solid foundation that will help me when I begin formal training. I’ve spent many weekends and fortnights at sea and I now feel very confident in performing various roles. Sharing the time at sea and ashore with like-minded people is always good fun."
"Outside of the URNU and life at university, there are a variety of courses and a huge number of sporting activities and adventurous training opportunities open to bursars. So far, I’ve been on an acquaint week at Britannia Royal Naval College ‘Dartmouth, a flying course at the naval air station in Yeovilton and a submarine acquaint course up in Faslane, Scotland. I get paid for each day spent on a course and expenses are all taken care of – it’s great!"
"Now I know what I can expect when I leave university and join up, and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t tell you how long I’m planning to stay in the Navy, though - I’ll see how long I enjoy it!”
