Career Profile - Royal Navy Weapons Engineer
Want to oversee the fighting systems on a massive warship? That’s what Richard Bowen does – he's a Weapons Engineer Officer.
“I joined the Royal Navy as a University Cadet. This meant that I completed Basic Training at the age of 18, and then the Royal Navy supported me financially as I studied for my 'A' Levels and my degree.
After I graduated with a Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering, and then got my professional training at the Maritime Warfare School. The skills I learned enabled me to become a Deputy Weapon Engineer Office on HMS Manchester.
I loved my two years on HMS Manchester, which included a deployment to the sunny Mediterranean. In July 2007, I went on a 6-month operational tour to Iraq. I worked alongside the Royal Marines Commandos in Basra. It was a fantastic opportunity - I was responsible for managing communications and IT across the entire operation.
The Royal Navy has taken me a long way – from my 'A' Levels to a full Engineering qualification, and from Leeds to the Far East. It has really made life what it is.
