Career Profile - Flight Lieutenant Oz Clarke
Flight Lieutenant Oz Clarke, Royal Air Force
Flight Lieutenant Oz Clarke joined the RAF after completing a BSc in Management and Logistics. Attending university as a RAF Bursar, Oz was a member of Oxford University Air Squadron based at RAF Benson. He is currently on his third assignment working alongside Army colleagues at 102 Logistic Brigade based in Germany.
"Being a Logistics Officer in the RAF is about diversity and breadth of knowledge. No two days are the same and that is what I love most about my job; my career to date proves testament to this. So far I have worked in Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands and Germany, whilst also deploying on exercises around the world in support of both the RAF and British Army.
I recently returned from the Falklands Islands where I was responsible for the supply of all fuel used to support British Forces on the Island. In order to do this job I had to attend a 9 month long specialist fuel course. You need this level of specialist knowledge in order to be able to deal with the array of day to day problems that have to be resolved so that we can keep the aircraft flying. It was a high profile job that stretched me as both a leader and subject matter expert; but that is what I joined for. Civilian jobs do not provide you with that level of responsibility this early on and I doubt they are ever as rewarding either!
On my return I was assigned to HQ 102 Logistic Brigade based in Germany. I now work directly for the Army as an RAF logistician. Working alongside 25 Army officers, we are responsible for the training and deployment of almost 4000 soldiers. This opportunity has again meant that I have had to refocus and learn new skills in order to effectively contribute to the output of the headquarters.
It’s not all work though and I have just returned from a week- long sailing expedition that has allowed me to sharpen my skills, around the Baltic coast. Being an enthusiastic sailor the military encouraged me to gain civilian recognised sailing qualifications so that I can lead adventurous training expeditions of my own.
While the military continues to challenge me and provide me with excitement and adventure I have no intention to leave. With a 6 month tour of Afghanistan coming up shortly I have no doubt that I will continue to be tested and rewarded as an RAF Logistics Officer."
