Beaumanor - ''Playing For Success'' Study Coaches (October - December 2009)

Over the past 10 weeks, a group of students from Welbeck have had the opportunity to be part of the ‘Playing For Success’ learning scheme at Beaumanor Hall. The 350 voluntary hours we achieved together as Study Coaches were not only a great help to the adults and groups at Beaumanor, but were also of great benefit to ourselves and our chosen careers in leadership.

The children taking part were specially selected by their schools as the ones which would benefit the most from the course. They consisted of primary school children up to year nines. The aim of the sessions was for each member of the group to be involved in fun physical activities yet to also be learning, whether in literacy, numeracy or simply growing in confidence in themselves. Weekly activities comprised of fire lighting, climbing and water races. A lot of the sessions demanded good teamwork and communication, something that the course was designed to develop. After the activities we were required to help the group with literacy and ICT skills, such as making posters and comic strips of the fire lighting activity. Sometimes the activities we helped with were quite demanding, but to see the group progress in ability and confidence from week to week was most rewarding.
