Great Central Railway 2007
College involvement at the local railway has continued and grown over the past year.
The Thursday GA, at Loughborough shed, has been of great assistance to the railway group, with some of our volunteers getting basic training in lathing and metalworking.
Unfortunately, as exams drew nearer the numbers fell, with sometimes only one volunteer making it. However, the new academic year has seen numbers back at full strength.
We have also stewarded for special events at weekends, including the 1960’s gala and a World War II weekend. The 1960’s gala went well (except for the weather), and took in much needed revenue for the line.
The WW2 weekend was less of a success, due to it being held the weekend that summer camp started, which meant only a handful volunteered to man the gates. The college band was “press ganged” into putting on an excellent display, despite the excessive heat and need to pack for summer camp.
The railway is also being used on Monday’s and Friday’s as compulsory leadership sessions, with the seniors doing 4 weeks “community service” both there and at a local junior school. Whether or not this will be of any value remains to be seen, as so far only one session has been held for each group.
