College Musical Recital Evening (May 2011)
On Thursday 12th May Welbeck College invited the local community for their support and to be entertained with a variety of musical talent ranging from the bagpipes to cello and flute. With a small entry fee and a raffle held we were hoping to raise some money for a local church, St Paul’s in Woodhouse Eaves, to mend their broken roof.
The evening commenced with the wind band who played a composition of Les Miserables. This was followed by solo performances from myself (flute), Matthew Syfret (cello), Alexander Riddell (French horn) and Jeremy Thomas (piano), then the Upper 6th members of the choir performed a cover of ‘Hero’ by Mariah Carey. We had a short interval which introduced the bagpipes played by Thomas Hughes, then followed further performances from Andrew Pyatt (vocal), Frederick Davies (oboe), Katharine Morten (flute), Zoe Cox and Andrew Graff (vocal and guitar). The night was brought to a close with all members of the choir singing ‘What a Wonderful World’ and a finale of ‘Dixieland Jazz’.
After the event had finished all the performers were asked to assemble in front of David Lindley (Community Representative of the Welbeck Board of Governors and retired Deputy Chief Constable of Leicestershire Police) who told us how inspired he felt and how successful he thought the night had been. I feel that everyone enjoyed the night, both the audience and the performers, and the evening was very relaxed and enjoyable. In total, we raised in excess of £100 for St Paul’s Church.
