Pride of Charnwood Awards (March 2011)
On the evening of Wednesday 16th March, ten students and the VPP travelled to the Imago Link Hotel for the inaugural Pride of Charnwood Awards Evening where the college was awarded the Runner Up Prize in the Improving the Environment category for its work on the Rotary Beacon Natural Play Area.
The Pride of Charnwood Award is organised by Charnwood Youth Council with the support of Charnwood Borough Council and Leicestershire County Council Youth Service. The awards aim to give positive recognition to young people who volunteer their time, effort and energy to improve the quality of life in Charnwood. There are four categories in the award which include:
- Caring for Others
- Helping the Community
- Improving the Environment
- Best Youth Group
Welbeck College students have volunteered to support two excellent community projects which led them to being nominated for the 'Helping the Community' and the 'Improving the Environment' Categories.
Helping the Community: Beaumanor Study Support Centre
Over the last two years a number of students have acted as study coaches at he Beaumanor Study Support Centre was part of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) initiative 'Playing for Success'. The aim was to engage 9-13 year old pupils in educational activities and raise self-esteem. During their 10 week term at the centre KS3 pupils took part in many challenges, each designed to educate and be fun at the same time. The role of a volunteer study coach requires enthusiasm, motivation and an ability to use one's initiative and the Welbeck students excelled in all of these aspects. This year's volunteers were coordinated by Lucy Stephens (09e Alanbrooke House) whose excellent organisational skills enabled the Welbeck contribution to be as strong as ever. Sadly the scheme has now succumbed to the funding cuts, but our students were grateful for the opportunity to become involved in this extremely rewarding project.
Improving the Environment: Rotary Beacon Natural Play Area
Over the last year a number of students also volunteered to assist The Rotary Club of Loughborough Beacon with the construction of a natural play area within the grounds of Beacon Hill Country Park. A number of Sundays were spent clearing undergrowth, extracting large stones from the ground, laying the foundations for and then constructing a variety of adventure play facilities out of logs and other natural materials. This play area is now a popular facility for young children and we are very proud of this creation. More details can be found here.
We are grateful to the Charnwood Youth Council for their generous hospitality on the evening of 16th March and for establishing the Pride of Charnwood Award initiative.
