Santa Fun Run (December 2010)
On Sunday 5th December 7 students and 2 members of staff from Welbeck DSFC travelled the short distance to Loughborough University to participate in the annual Charity Santa Fun Run. The course, which was shortened to approximately 4km because of the snow, ice and temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius, had to be completed in Santa suits provided by the event organisers.
As soon as the race countdown finished the streets of Loughborough were paved red as people of all ages ran through them. The course was made much more difficult due to the freezing conditions and icy pavements, however fortunately the Welbeck team completed the course without injury. 24 additional students from Welbeck also assisted with marshalling and cheering on the 1000+ runners who participated in the event.
Upon finishing the race the Welbeck runners were given medals and bars of chocolate to restore lost energy and to keep warm in the freezing conditions. To make the event even more worthwhile students raised over £250 which will go towards various charities including LOROS, Rainbows, Help For Heroes and Riding For The Disabled. A huge ‘thank you’ must go to Major Reid for enabling us to run and marshal this event.
On the same day Welbeck students were also serving the local community in a variety of other ways. A number of students sang carols in the Carillon Court Shopping Centre in Loughborough managing to raise £127.92 for Help for Heroes while another group of students worked on the 'Santa Special' train service at Loughborough's Great Central Railway by serving mulled wine and mince pies to passengers on their journey to Rothley Station. We would like to thank Messrs Lang and Jess for assisting with these two ventures.
