Santa Fun Run (December 2011)

On Sunday 4th December 2011 a team of 28 runners and 16 marshals set off early to take part in The Great Loughborough Santa Fun Run, an annual event organised by the Loughborough Rotary Club to raise money for local charities. The event comprised of a 6 km run from the University campus into the town centre and back again. Welbeck marshals who lined the route and guided runners through the course were praised for their turnout, dedication and enthusiasm.
All the runners were kitted up in Santa Suits issued to them by the organisers. This sea of red was an amazing sight and caused much amusement amongst the Christmas shoppers of Loughborough. Of the Welbeck runners a few started with the 'elite' runners including Simon Marr, Cameron Walters and Major Reid (VPM), whilst the remainder opted to start with the 'fun' runners and tackle the event as a team. At both starts Welbeck competitors sped away from the rest of the competition, putting a sizeable gap between themselves and the main body of runners. As we progressed through the course Welbeck fitness prevailed with impressive runs by all. Special mentions go to Reece Statham-Quilty for finishing 5th, Simon Marr behind him in 6th and LVI students Luke Williams and Cameron Walters in 8th and 10th respectively. Many thanks to the marshals for keeping up morale around the circuit, and well done to the 27 students and Major Reid for representing Welbeck and putting in solid performances.
