Santa Specials at the Great Central Railway (December 2010)
It was a cold December Sunday morning when the Welbeck students descended upon Loughborough’s Great Central Railway to be Santa’s little helpers. The Great Central Railway is just down the road from Welbeck where trains which are over 200 years old still carry on running back and forth between vintage stations. During a ‘Santa Special’ event Santa swaps his sleigh for a fun filled journey on an enchanting steam train. Our day was spent following Santa up and down the train as it moved between various stations from Loughborough to Leicester North handing Santa suitable presents to give to good boys and girls. We split up at the beginning of the day onto different trains (Deluxe and Super Deluxe) with one taking longer to complete its journey than the other. On the return journey we restocked the three trolley loads of presents and made ready for the next round of trips.
A couple of us also got the chance to decorate the 20 ft Christmas tree that greeted customers as they entered the station, however it is safe to say that we didn’t manage to climb up too high! Once completed, it looked very festive (well, as high as 10 ft anyway!). I enjoyed the day thoroughly as we had the opportunity to make lots of children happy and help spread a little bit of Christmas cheer throughout the train with an endless supply of mince pies for all of the children and their parents.
I would say that it was a great way to spend a Sunday helping the local community and an even better way to kick start the festive season.
