ICT
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was seen to be a core aspect of the college and was fully integrated into the original designs of the complete building. The core networking system of the college integrates all education and boarding areas into a single campus network with over 1,800 active network points available for use. Every study bedroom is equipped with full network connectivity and the education area of the college provides wireless networking capability to all classrooms.
The entire ICT infrastructure is designed for full 24x7 availability and utilises a number of advanced technologies to ensure such availability, some of these technologies include load balanced and clustered server systems / redundant disk arrays / dual backup systems / redundant backbone cabling systems and failover internet links. Business class software has been utilised throughout to both ensure availability and ensure manufacturer support should a fault occur.
Upon arrival at the DSFC all students are issued with college laptops and carry cases which although owned by the college are given permanently to the students upon completion of their two year course(*1). The only cost to the students for the provision of this facility is a £10 per term(*2) charge to cover the compulsory insurance policy to protect against Theft / Loss / Damage of the provided laptop.
In addition to each student being allocated a laptop we also have a large number of desktop computers available on site. Every classroom is equipped with at least one PC connected to a Sound and projection system and some classrooms are set up with multiple PC's to allow a full class to have a PC each. There are also a number of general use PC's available to both staff and students in our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) and Internet Cafe areas.
High quality printing services are available to all students via a large number of printers available at strategic locations around the college campus. Most printers are double sided black and white A4 printers, but printing upto A1 size full colour can be accommodated. In order to try and encourage students to be responsible with their printing the college operates a "Print Credit" system whereby students are allocated a monthly credit which they have manage to ensure that they have enough credit available throughout the year. This process has reduced our paper consumption dramatically since implementation and has drastically reduced the amount of waste paper produced. We also encourage the use of electronic rather than printed documents which can be distributed easily via email / shared data areas.
High Speed internet (web) access is available to all students from any location in the college that has network coverage. We utilise advanced web filtering software to ensure that web access is safe for use by all staff and students.
Every student is given their own personal email box on our system and can freely communicate with staff / other students / external recipients via this system. The email system is also available from outside the college so that communication can be continued even when the student is away from the college. Advanced anti-spam / content filtering software ensure that unwanted email is kept to an absolute minimum and students are very well protected from fraud based scams and pornographic material which could normally be delivered via email.
In addition to the physical ICT hardware implemented around the college we have also invested heavily in software solutions to enable the college to perform effectively. We have a bespoke student records management system which is used for all student records and details, this includes a parental portal that allows us to publish electronic reports / attendance figures / PFT scores to parents via the internet. We also have a bespoke electronic touch screen notice board system distributed around the college and an Intranet system that has been developed in-house as well as a bespoke Library system to manage library loans. Students have access to internal information forums to discuss both college and non-college related subjects and they also have access to large quantities of educational resources created and compiled by our Academic teaching staff.
The whole ICT system is managed on a day to day basis by a dedicated team of ICT Staff, these staff are available on-site 6 days a week during term time and their job is to ensure that the system is available 100% of the time. They have implemented sophisticated monitoring tools and are normally aware of any potential problems well before they become critical and potentially affect availability.
