Boarding and Pastoral Care
Students and parents acknowledge the excellent quality of care provided by the staff.
- Independent Schools Inspectorate, 2009
We believe that the residential environment of Welbeck offers our students valuable benefits, not least because of the strong sense of community that it fosters. The College is a relatively small, close-knit community, meaning everyone gets to know one another very quickly; a vital ingredient in our continued success.
Boarding at Welbeck
The Defence Sixth Form College is ideal preparation for both university and for life in one of the four Services. You will quickly settle into the Welbeck way of life and derive tremendous benefits from living and learning with students who share a common goal: the desire to work within and in support of the Military. Despite coming from a range of backgrounds, our students also share many personal interests, such as an aspiration to lead and a passion for sports and outdoor life. It really is true to say that the friends you make here at Welbeck will be your friends for life.
The Boarding Houses
All students are allocated to one of five houses under the control of a qualified Houseparent and Deputy Houseparent who manage the care and overall development of the students in their house. Each Boarding House has its own identity, and our students tend to develop strong ties within their House, promoting healthy competition across the College. This supportive yet flexible framework provides an ideal ‘home from home’, and facilitates a smooth transition from the College to university and Initial Officer Training. The College prides itself in ensuring that all residential staff are experienced Houseparents and will have undertaken training with either the Boarding School Association or other nationally accredited bodies. Our Houseparents work in close liaison with parents in seeking to encourage independence, maturity and responsibility in every student who becomes a member of this College.
Students’ pastoral care and welfare
When you join Welbeck you will become a member of a tutor group that is used for academic monitoring purposes. All teaching staff take part in supervisory duties during the working part of the evening, and many assist with College club activities in order to provide a varied range of extra-curricular activities for the students. Boarding creates a stimulating and supportive atmosphere in which the resident House Staff are assisted by a number of tutors (usually members of the academic staff). There are also a number of housekeepers, as well as a Medical Centre with a
qualified nurse in attendance.
Values and Standards
The College prides itself on providing high standards of pastoral care for its students whilst ensuring that our potential leaders of the future aspire to meet the demanding requirements of the ‘Values and Standards’ required of officers in the Armed Services. Such values
include selfless commitment, courage, high standards of discipline, integrity, loyalty and respect for others. Together, such values are considered to be a vital part of the leadership and personal development programme for our College community. Welbeck is therefore an unparalleled educational establishment with quite unique expectations of its students. However, we believe that requiring our students to aspire to such high values and standards produces highly committed
and potentially very successful individuals.
Induction
We are very conscious that the majority of our students are new to residential education. As a new student you will enter an induction programme upon arrival. This will support your transition into your new lifestyle, and as a part of this support, selected members of our experienced upper sixth are tasked and trained to look after you and your fellow new entrants. Our trained prefect and peer mentor teams will help you to settle in quickly, especially during your first few weeks at the College.
Expectations
Students must recognise that most of them are joining the college as full time boarders and consequently the majority of their social time will be on site. Welbeck students may not have as much freedom as they do at home; for some this is difficult, but the house staff and tutors will endeavour to give everyone a rich, enjoyable and fulfilling boarding experience whilst keeping them safe and well. To compensate for the restrictions, there is a very wide range of facilities and activities available on site which is a major benefit of boarding and communal living at Welbeck.
Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education
In addition to the academic and pastoral care programme, every student benefits from a Personal, Health, Social and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) course which addresses a variety of issues which are considered to be relevant to both our students’ stage of development and their future role in the Armed Services and the Civil Service. This is also supported by an assembly programme which is designed to accommodate all faiths.
