Personal Development and Physical Fitness Training
All students are expected to play a full part in Personal Developments training which includes Self-Reliance and Leadership training components. This will involve undertaking command and communication tasks, hill walking, map reading, kayaking, climbing, first aid and battle fitness training using the college high ropes and assault course. In order to undertake such training students are required to demonstrate a level of fitness which will allow them to successfully participate in such training.
In addition the Welbeck extra-curricular programme allows students to undertake a range of sporting and non-sporting activities. In order to succeed and get the best out of their Welbeck and DTUS university years they need to follow a progressive Basic Fitness Assessment programme which allows them to improve their basic fitness as they move through the college.
At regular intervals students will undertake a Personal Fitness Test (PFT) supervised by both the military and civilian PT staff. For each of the components of the tests there are minimum standards for them to achieve.
The Entry to Welbeck standard is outlined below :
Students should demonstrate a minimum acceptable fitness standard prior to admission to Welbeck which includes 3 components: a 1.5 mile run, basic Sit-ups (with feet supported) and basic Press-ups.
Pre entry students are required to undertake the following basic tests and should produce evidence of participation in sport on a regular basis.

- Many students will outperform these targets as these reflect the minimum standards expected of all students, however all students are excepted to demonstrate a progressive improvement in their fitness throughout their time at the college.
- The targets are set for all students irrespective of their destination service, so in reality Army, RN , RAF and Civil Service students are all expected to reach the same standard.
- Students will be given every opportunity to improve their fitness during their time at the college but
ultimately the responsibility for training and reaching the standards is theirs and if they fail to reach
the minimum standards at Welbeck they put at risk their progression into the DTUS scheme post Welbeck.
