49 Brigade Cocktail Party (September 2009)

On 24th September the Senior College Prefects (plus one) and three members of staff left the college to travel to 49 Bgd Cocktail party at Kedlestone Hall. We were tasked with representing the college to a set of guests who we were to host for the evening. With many senior officers present and none of us having ever done anything of this nature before, we were not quite sure what to expect.
After terrible traffic on the way down, we were behind on arrival. It was a quick photo stop before the flag party (SUO Mahoney, JUO Mayes and JUO Roberts) were rushed out to practise. Once this was completed it was back to the social area to meet our guests where we got to know everyone from Major Generals to Job Seeker Plus Managers.
At about 1930hrs the flag party made their way out onto the parade ground followed shortly by the other guests. We then watched the Beating of the Retreat played by the Bgd band. Whilst everyone else was very comfortable, the flag party were bitten to pieces by midges. On their last song the flag was to be lowered. As it was lowered it snagged, but the naval pro (SUO Mahoney) managed to get it down safely before the National Anthem.
After the ceremony it was back into the hall for a few last drinks before departure. The evening was really enjoyed by all, and I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all who went to thank the staff for attending, especially Maj Smith who passed on the invitation to us.
