Armed Forces Day at Deepcut RLC Base (June 2010)
On Saturday 26th June, the RLC sponsored students attended the Armed Forces Day at the RLC Base at Deepcut. At 0700 we had breakfast, grabbed our packed lunches and boarded the bus. We left College at 0740 but by 0800 we had broken down outside McDonalds. Nobody was really complaining though so we settled in and waited for the AA to save the day while having a burger and enjoying the sun.
At approximately 1030 we were on our way again, only to be met by the midday traffic. We finally arrived at the base at 1330 and after a brief question as to the parking we were finally able to stretch our legs. Since Captain Lamb was absent our instructions were to wander the fair and talk to the recruiting personnel. The fair consisted of a massive display of all the latest and best at the RLC’s disposal as well as a stage on which events took place ranging from touch rugby to the cavalry sport of tent pegging where the lancers must attempt to spear pegs from the ground at full gallop. There was also a tug of war tournament between units and a parachute display. Apart from this most of the stands around the site were very much RLC based showing off weapons, equipment and trades of the soldiers. We were able to get a lot of answers from the staff and enjoyed the active parts of the demonstrations.
At 1630 we returned to the bus having seen all there was to see and having enjoyed every moment. The return journey was much easier, but by the time we arrived back at College there were not many hours left in the day to do anything except rest.
