Battle of Britain Memorial Parade (September 2011)
On Thursday 15th September a selection of RAF sponsored students plus DESG, Royal Navy and British Army representatives were asked to parade the Welbeck Colour at the Battle of Britain Memorial Parade in Rothley, a village located between Loughborough and Leicester. This was a small parade held at the village’s Cenotaph, with words said by members of the community who have close links to the Battle itself and also our Training Officer, Flight Lieutenant Askew.
After a run through of our drill on the College parade square we left at 0900 to arrive in time to change into our best shoes and compose ourselves. We were met at The Rothley Centre from where we marched down to the Cenotaph to present the College Colour. The Union Flag was raised during the service by Flying Officer Lang, Welbeck DSFC CCF and one minutes silence was observed in remembrance of those who fought in the Battle of Britain.
The short service concluded with the Colour Party and the squad marching back to The Rothley Centre. Tea and biscuits were served and there was time to chat to those who attended the service from the local area. We spoke to a variety of people, some about their time serving our country and others who were interested in finding out more about Welbeck.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our time talking to the different members of the community and felt immensely proud to be there and to take part in this unique experience.
