Cadet Cambrian Patrol (September 2011)
On Friday 16th September 10 students departed Welbeck with CS Kelly and Lt Pervin to compete in the Cadet Cambrian Patrol, a competition in which Welbeck has been invited to participate for the past two years.
The Patrol takes place at Sennybridge Training Area in Wales for Welsh ACF and CCF units as a test of military skills. The weekend was split into two sections with the Saturday being spent doing command tasks, writing orders and preparing to deploy into the field that evening. Sadly the rain that started on Friday continued throughout the weekend, and to our disappointment the exercise did not take the term ‘tactical’ very seriously with our section being the only one to deploy sentries and stick to light discipline. The ambush we conducted late on Saturday night consisted of instructors leading us to and from the sight and quite obviously radioing the ‘enemy’ who we were going to ambush.
The next day consisted of a round robin of four different assessment stands located between 3 to 6 kilometres apart. A schedule of 45 minutes to complete each stand and 45 minutes to travel between them was a very hopeful aim on the part of the organisers, and we arrived at the first stand 30 minutes late losing all points for that stand as we were unable to complete it. After starting towards the next point, even further away than the last, we took the decision as a team to skip the second point and move straight to the third to try and gain maximum points at the last two checkpoints. This last minute tactic appeared to pay off as high scores at the navigation and section attack assessments earned the team a bronze medal. However, after returning to the HQ we found out that most of the other cadet teams had been shuttled from point to point by minibus!
Sincere thanks to both CSgt Kelly and Lt Pervin for accompanying us on what was a very enjoyable weekend.
