Drill Competition (November 2009)
The British Forces are famous for their Pomp and Ceremony, their Precision Drill and their Traditions. When it comes to drill, the Forces are renowned for stamping, shouting and, for some reason, that scary Sergeant Major with the moustache, slashed peak and the large stick.
However, on the afternoons of the 1st and the 3rd of December, the College (unperturbed by said Sergeant Major) competed in its Annual Drill Competition.
It all kicked off on the Tuesday, with the Military Staff and the JUOs having a final briefing about the workings of the competition, and then it was off to the Parade Square.
For the Lower Sixth it was an important day. The Drill Competition for them consisted of their Inspection and Drill Test, which if passed would allow them to wear their Single Service Dress and Stable Belt.
Nerves were high, as several weeks of practice and preparation came together. Under the steely eye of the Vice Principal Military, the squads performed the assigned sequence followed by a short individual sequence.
As for the Upper Sixth, it was time to crack open the polish, get boots bulled and trousers pressed. Our inspection was somewhat more stringent than the Lowers, but then again parade dress does have much more opportunity to fail than CS95’s. The drill sequence was also a lot tougher, with squads snaking up, down and around the square.
Despite the horrific weather there was a fantastic show of drill with all students putting in 100 percent effort.
Congratulations must go to the Lower Sixth, as 98 of the students passed their test first time with around 37 passing the second time.
Best Upper Sixth Platoon was awarded to 9 Platoon of Trenchard House scoring 134 points, closely followed by 10 Platoon of Trenchard House with 132 points. In third place was 6 Platoon of Portland House with 130 points.
Finally, congratulations to Stirling House for winning the title of ‘Best Overall Platoon’.
The prizes will be awarded on the next Tuesday Morning Parade.
Well done to all who participated, as this was the best show of drill that the College has seen for some time.
Robert Sharp, Trenchard 08E
