Regional Orienteering Competition (January 2011)
On Sunday 16th January, Welbeck entered its first competitive orienteering event under the guidance of Major Andy Reid (VPM).
The team, which had been selected largely on the merits of some impressive inter-house orienteering scores in October, set out for the competition at 1100hrs with spirits high despite the fact that Major Reid insisted that we should get to the start on foot.
It was just a few minutes’ walk to the car park where ... oops, wrong car park. Despite this hitch we ran the mile to the correct starting place and were still keen to go in spite of our slightly too extensive warm up! After a quick team photo standing by the Beacon itself we lined up at the start with our dibbers and set off at four minute intervals on the blissfully short Under-18 course.
Though extremely windy the rain held off until much later in the day and visibility was good, allowing us to navigate the course with relative ease though one or two runners had their checkpoint nemeses which cost them valuable minutes. Our main foe on the day was fitness, with some of the Christmas break’s mince pies and long hours in front of the fire holding us back. Despite this we pushed on and achieved some impressive scores on the day. Out of thirty runners in the category we placed two in the top ten, two in the top twenty and one in the top twenty nine with Peter Rhodes and Martyn Mangan snatching 6th and 7th respectively, finishing 1st and 2nd in the runners from Leicestershire.
While walking back we were happy to reflect that we could have achieved higher on another day with normal Welbeck fitness levels resumed. We eagerly anticipated the dining hall packed lunches which awaited us, and they did not disappoint either.
Many thanks go to Major Reid for accompanying us, and to Maria Lynch who volunteered a decent portion of her Sunday to come and photograph our efforts. I certainly look forward to being involved in further orienteering events in the future.
