Ski Caper (March 2010)
The trip was a week long beginning on 13th Febuary and ending on 20th Febuary, however the first and last day were spent travelling there and back by coach. The trip cost £370 which is considerably less than the College ski trip or skiing privately. The course was run by the Cadet Centre for Adventurous Training which runs adventure training for the Army Cadets as well as the Combined Cadet Force.
The trip to Bavaria involved meeting the coach in Derby, South Mimms or Dover followed by a quick ferry trip to Calais then 14 hours on a ‘luxury’ coach before finally arriving at Haus am Brannenbach where we were to be based for the remainder of the week. Haus am Brannenbach is a hotel used by the cadets for its skiing weekends - the rooms are basic but comfortable with most sharing in rooms of 3 or 4.
The basic programme for the week was that we had to be at breakfast for 0720 and ready to leave for the slopes at 0830, return times were then decided while we were out on the slopes but was usually around 1600. In the evening it was our own free time to get some extra sleep or socialise, although we were not allowed out into the town.
On the Monday we visited Ifen where we learnt the basics on the baby slopes. On Tuesday we visited Jungholz to hone our skills on slightly steeper slopes. On the Wednesday we visited Thalkirchdorf which involved a 1.5km t-bar which proved too difficult for a lot of the group. On Thursday we visited Adelharz where we had our first encounter of a white out. That evening we visited Oberjoch for a bit of night skiing and boarding which completely changes your perception of speed, distance and the bumps. On our final day before heading home we travelled back to Oberjoch where we were let loose to have a bit of fun and have our assessments for our snow life awards.
During the course we were taught how to scoot with one foot on the board, heel and toe edge slides and also how to link our heel and toe edge turns, and for the more advanced members of the group the basics of carving and doing 180 jumps. The weather was far warmer than expected and much sunnier than the UK, except for the Thursday when we were skiing in a white out which meant we were unable to see more than a couple of yards in front of us.
Also attending from Welbeck was Sam Hurst who was skiing for the week, the rest of the group were made up of people from units all over the country - in total there were 40 cadets on the course. The week was extremely enjoyable for me, although I had lots of falls and several bruises by the end of the week. I thought the course was a success as I had never snowboarded before and by the end of the week I was able to stand up and link my turns.
I would recommend this course for everyone whether they have boarded/skied before or are complete beginners as you get to meet new people and have a laugh. The best way to find out more information is to look at www.armycadetadventure.info and wait for the skiing details to be posted at the end of the year. The course is always run in February Half Term and there are 2 x 1-week long courses so one will fall during colleges’ Half Term.
