Exercise Welbeck Patrol (October 2011)
On Saturday 8th October the U6 left for Exercise Welbeck Patrol. Morale wasn't so high with the wet forecast and the rumours about even wetter tasks! However, after morning lessons and a quick lunch we paraded and set off.
This Exercise was different to the others which we have completed so far whilst at Welbeck. We set off in sections and spent the next 26 hours with them completing specific tasks along the way. Every section was given a different order in which to do each task, but all sections completed all stands. To complete this we needed to work as an efficient team whilst exercising our brains. This was the first time we had experienced physics whilst on Exercise!
The tasks were spread over a range of areas, not only by location but also by the ways in which to complete them. We completed a task which consisted of crawling through a dark tunnel as a team with a large rope – we had been told that there was a river running through also! Though, unlike the rumours, the tunnel was not half full of water – maybe only a couple of inches. As well as this we also completed tasks which made use of the scientific laws which we learn about in the classroom, for example we had to load an aircraft with certain objects of different weights - not as easy as it sounds! Everything had to add up so that the aircraft balanced, and there were restrictions on which objects could go where! We made use of our first aid knowledge to rescue a 'casualty' and were put to the test whilst trying to avoid a rather smelly bog. We did, however, have some more relaxed times, particularly the abseiling and also in the evening - due to the Exercise being non-tactical it was quite relaxed and sociable. There was plenty of chat around the camp fires, whilst others chose to go to sleep early in the safe knowledge that we were not going to be 'bugged out' (a simulated 'attack') on this occasion.
The following day was an early start for those who like their Sunday lie in, although still relatively late for a Military Exercise (0700hrs). Sunday was a continuation of the rotation of stands with sections finishing at different times in the early afternoon.
After our final parade we returned to complete a normal Sunday at College - relaxing with not too much to do. The Exercise was good fun and a complete change from the usual modus operandi for CCF Exercises. After hot showers, food and a little more sleep everyone was pretty happy with their weekend 'exploring the local area'.
