Cross Country Race (September 2011)
On 28th September 2011 the Welbeck Cross Country Team, consisting of 8 males and 6 females, headed out to ADSC Lichfield to take part in the first race of the 5 Division Cross Country League. This was the first time that Welbeck had taken part in this league, which is competed in by Regular British Army personnel.
The course was long, hard and bathed in intense sunshine which made it difficult for all runners taking part. It consisted of a 1 mile track which then went into a 2 mile circuit around a wood which entailed a gradual up hill run, a steep decline to a canal, along the canal and then up through the wood which was the toughest part of the course. The girls had to run only one lap so including the run to the finish it was 4 miles for them. The males, however, had to run 2 laps which, in the heat, was a gruelling experience.
Overall the male team finished in 3rd position with the female team finishing in 1st. Special mentions go to Holly Kirkham who came second in the girls’ race and former student, Josh Dixon 07e, for winning the male race.
