Inter-Platoon Orienteering Competition (November 2009)
On the 17th and 19th November the usual MLT lessons were replaced with the Inter-Platoon Orienteering Competition. Every student took part in the mad hunt to find as many check points as possible in the Outwoods.
The set up differed from last year’s event which was competed in teams. This year each student competed individually, finding as many of the 30 check points as possible within the hour given. Like any orienteering competition each student was given an electronic ‘dibber’, map and list of check points and was sent into the woodland from one of two starting points.
Half an hour into the competition and there was a multitude of students in rainbow coloured vests running frantically around the Outwoods and the surrounding area - a strange site for any nonchalant civilian enjoying a quiet afternoon stroll.
The organisers had been very crafty with the placing of the check points this year, with a number in sections of woodland coloured with the code “fight”. The points stretched the length of the Outwoods with a couple of points in the surrounding open land. A special mention must go to William Reeve for finding all 30 check points within the hour.
Every student put in maximum effort, especially those who have had very little or no orienteering experience. The top 5 males were William Reeve, Samuel Scott, Kingsley Ripley, Peter Briggs and Charles Calvert. The top 5 females were Vanessa Fields, Michelle Sangan, Kimberley Norris, Charlotte Pickles and Ellen Blackie.
Overall it was a win for Portland House. Many thanks must go to the Prefects (especially JUO Jordan Mayes) and Staff that helped to organise the event. Our thanks must also go to Mr Edwards and Leicester Orienteering Club.
