London Soldier (September 2006)
On 21st September 2006, Vicky Willis and I, accompanied by the Adjutant, travelled to Chelsea Barracks in London to participate in recruitment, known as London Soldier. The aim of the event was to advertise the different arms and services within the Army, and provide opportunities for interested personnel to talk to full time regular servicemen. The event provided displays of military equipment and activities, and this year there were opportunities to try a simulated Parachute Jump, use climbing walls and take part in a paintball target range. Other activities included the use of a variety of military equipment such as Challenger 2, for enthusiasts to climb in and over.
The event was primarily aimed at Army recruiting, and as both Vicky and I are Army fostered students, we represented Welbeck aiming to provide information regarding the College to all interested parties, including those who might be interested in joining the other Services and the Ministry of Defence. We took several boxes of prospectuses and two display stands, but it was our knowledge of the application processes and our opinions of the College that interested most of the potential candidates.
The first day was quite disappointing as the teenagers brought to the event were more interested in a day off school, rather than any particular interest in the Services and activities at the Welbeck stand. However, Friday was marginally better, with a large number of careers guidance staff from the schools visiting, collecting the information on offer to advise their students with.
The most successful day of all was Saturday, as the visitors to the site arrived voluntarily, having been invited from among the local Combined Cadet Force / Army Cadet Force Community, meaning that those visiting the stand already had a genuine interest, and in many cases had already considered applying.
Recruiting at London Soldier was particularly successful as it gave the public an insight into the armed forces. Likewise, we found the trip very enjoyable as we were able to share our interest with others during the day, and then sample the London atmosphere during the evenings. I would recommend the event to any student who feels they might like to volunteer for 2007.
