Para's 10 (September 2010)

On Sunday 12th September 19 students and 1 member of staff woke to an early 05:30 start so that they could travel to Catterick Garrison and prepare themselves for one of the biggest challenges of their lives so far. This would not only challenge their physical strength but also their mental strength, for this was the Para’s 10 P Coy Challenge - 10 gruelling miles following the actual Paratrooper selection course carrying a 35lb bergan and boots.
With many of the competitors arriving late the race was postponed half an hour so it was to be a 10:30 start. This did not help the nerves of some of the students who were already beginning to doubt their own physical capabilities having realised what lay ahead.
The race commenced with a mad flurry of people running quickly off the mass start with each student soon settling down into their own rhythm and hoping that their pacing would last them the 10 miles and finish them under the magical Paratrooper pass time of 1 hour 50 minutes or the TA pass time of 2 hours.
Everyone ran really well but had to dig deep in the final mile as the last 2 hills were absolute killers. A final maximum effort along the finishing straight saw competitors gain a few seconds and almost collapsing as they crossed under the finishing banner.
Congratulations to Max Camozzi who completed the challenge in the quickest time, and Sarah Batts who was the only female to represent the College. Overall the event was a great success with 4 students achieving full Para pass and 5 achieving the TA Para pass time.
Special thanks go to Colour Sergeant Kelly and Ma'am Pervin for helping with the organisation and transport to and from the event.
