RAES Lecture (November 2009)
On the 17th November a group of RAF and RN students from Welbeck took the opportunity to visit Loughborough University to attend a lecture given by Mr Tony Graham, Naval Architect and Director of Capital Ships. After first walking into the wrong building and wandering around in circles, we eventually found the correct lecture theatre in plenty of time before the presentation was due to start.
Mr Graham based his talk on the two new carriers to be built for the Royal Navy in the next few years. We listened in total admiration and awe of the work and skills that have gone into creating these ships. The new UK CVF Royal Navy aircraft carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, which are expected to enter service in 2016 and 2018, will cost approximately £4.6 billion in total and will take in excess of 3.5 million man hours to complete the design and build. Hearing such facts and figures amazed us, and we sat intrigued for over two hours while he showed us pictures and films of the progress of the building and what the carrier will look like when completed. The lecture discussed the roles, design, configurations and operations of the future aircraft carriers, including the aircraft to be used on these carriers (F-35). It was a superb opportunity for us, both Naval and Air Force students, to gain such a great insight to this exquisite new technology that has been developed.
As the evening concluded we thanked Mr Graham, and afterwards travelled the short journey back to Welbeck. All in all, the night was a great success as we definitely benefitted from the lecture and questions/debates at the end which gave us a much greater knowledge about the aircraft carriers and technology the Royal Navy are now using.
