Senior Service Visit (September 2009)
On the 29th and 30th of September, students from Defence Sixth Form College (DSFC) also known as Welbeck College went for an acquaint visit to Britannia Royal Naval College and HMS BULWARK. After a long coach journey to Devonport from home at DSFC the 39 Navy cadets were given a tour of the amphibious vessel HMS Bulwark, star of the Warship programme, by engineers on board. We were shown the various systems we might be dealing with as officers in the future, including the Goalkeeper CIWS gun, targeting radars and the Ops Room. The rear dock of the vessel and the incumbent RM craft were also particularly impressive.
Afterwards the students travelled to BRNC where they had the opportunity to meet and dine with the Officer Cadets, in their fourth week of training, who told them about the demands of the training scheme and gave them tips about preparation for their future time at the college. Commodore Moores opened the trip by welcoming the DSFC students to the college and gave a short presentation about the expectations at BRNC. The students subsequently received presentations about their future careers by serving RN engineering officers at the college. The students then spent a highly enjoyable session out on the colleges Picket boats utilised for basic navigation and seamanship training; piloting them along the Dart river. The students were issued with their No. 1 uniforms which they will proudly display at the Annual General Inspection parade at Welbeck college in front of several thousand spectators in the first week of July.
DSFC provides a technical sixth form education for those who wish to become officers in the Armed Forces or engineers in the Civil Service alongside a CCF syllabus that is designed to develop leadership and management potential. Students at the college through their unique position get access to the best the military has to offer; be it trips to the Astute project or 3 week summer exercises with support from Army military corps. Students who choose the Royal Navy undertake the Admiralty Interview Board and 2 years at DSFC before sponsorship through University before entering the gates of BRNC and gaining an Officer Commission in Marine, Weapons, or Air Engineering. Potential students to the college should visit its website at dsfc.ac.uk and find out about the great opportunities available.
