Warminster Firepower Demonstration (October 2009)
On Tuesday October 13th, a group of Junior Under Officers and Staff Sergeants from Welbeck DSFC took the long trip from College to Warminster to witness a military show of force by the British Army. After a long minibus journey of sleeping and maths revision we were greeted by burly guards and an Apache Longbow gunship, as well as many types of tank and other armoured vehicles. We spent a long time in awe of the sheer size and fire power of some of these machines, their operators only too keen to show off the capabilities of weapons systems and computer wizardry.
The different engineering corps of the Army, as well as the various Infantry battalions, were represented at stands demonstrating new and up coming weapons, from automatic shotguns to the Javelin missile launcher. We learnt how to track and lock on to aircraft threats using the Rapier missile system and were allowed to use the equipment to practice the technique, which was a lot harder than the professionals made it look. The group also got a chance to try on the new age body armour that is a quarter of the weight of conventional Kevlar which will have a dramatic effect on battle fatigue in a soldier.
A great day was had by all, the amount of weaponry there would have taken days to properly understand, however unfortunately we only had two hours before returning to College. It is fascinating that the weapons and devices that we witnessed on the trip are making, and will make, such a large difference in our country’s area of operations for troops on the ground as well as free democracies around the world.
