Burns Night Supper (January 2008)
Stirling House celebrated Burns Night in traditional style with a five course dinner and a Ceilidh band to follow. After much preparation the evening began with welcome drinks in the quorum. The guests included Stirling’s 68 resident students, the house staff, and a select few honourary guests including Colonel Donald Ross, Welbeck’s previous SMI, Mr Adam and Mr Disney.
Dinner commenced soon after grace was given from James Bigley, and we began with a typical Scottish starter; Scotch Broth! Whilst eating we were entertained by traditional Scottish dancing and singing. We were upstanding for the piping in of the haggis led by Callum Gunn and Chef John presented the haggis complete with neeps and tatties to the Guest of Honour, Col. Ross.
The speeches and toasts were lining up to be one of the highlights of the evening. Mrs Hardern gave a very entertaining and in depth account of the life of Robert Burns, giving a bit more meaning as to why we celebrate Burns Night. We also had a spontaneous speech from Mr Adam with many amusing tales being told of his career in the Army. I feel also few people would forget the dramatic Address to the Haggis Col Ross gave, despite understanding little of his Scottish accent! Next came the long awaited toast to the lasses and the lads. Respectfully the boys went first putting forward true Scot, Jamie Martin, who very dryly and subtly suggested there is much more to Stirling lasses then meets the eye. In retaliation up stood Sophie Longstone who had the audience in fits of laughter reminding us of how many of the lads simply cry out for love as well as their somewhat inappropriate comments regarding girlfriends!
So after finishing off the cheese and biscuits and very much behind schedule we all moved through the Quorum for some traditional Scottish dancing. The wine and whisky drunk during dinner came into affect here with some very entertaining dance routines in need of much concentration. It was clear to all that by the time of Auld Lang Syne and more bizarrely the hokey kokey, all guests really didn’t want to leave. But all good things must come to an end and as the lower 6th began tidying away I hope many were thinking I can’t wait for the next Burns Supper.
Many thanks need to go to Mr Copley who helped me organise the event, as well as Mr Hayes and his catering team for providing the excellent dinner. Portland House lower 6th also need a mention for nobly agreeing to set up beforehand and thanks to Ciaron Milne as the acting photographer.
