Alanbrooke Social - A Day at the Races (April 2008)
Sunday 13th April saw members of Alanbrooke, accompanied by racing fanatic Mr Armstrong, each armed with £10 travel to Uttoexeter race course to enjoy an afternoon at the races.
The weather started off quite badly with grey skies and a steady drizzle, then progressively worse throughout the day, ending in torrential downpour. The grandstand did offer some shelter but most ended up completely soaked through by the end of the day, particularly those who had decided against bringing waterproofs. However, the weather did nothing to dampen our spirits and the first race began at 1200 with many deciding to just observe the first race, rather than placing a bet. It was an adventurous start with one of the jockeys falling off at the second jump and narrowly missing being trampled.
There were a range of races of varying length throughout the day, all had jumps resulting in about 6 falls and 2 horses finishing the race without a jockey, much to the amusement of the crowd.
There were food stands and people selling merchandise, which attracted a fair amount of attention, with many choosing to spend their £10 on food and drink as well as some betting. Mr Armstrong attempted to provide us with some useful tips on how to choose a winning horse and had chosen some favourites which were likely to do well according to the information given on each of the horses. Unfortunately none of his “likely winners” won but there was still some success throughout the day, with Jeremy green winning £36 on one of the races. He was unfortunately one of the few lucky ones as many people failed to break even. All the same a good time was had by all. Thanks goes to Mr Armstrong who organised the day and Dr. Palmer who provided us with the money to bet.
