Trafalgar Night Mess Dinner (October 2009)
On the evening of Wednesday 7th October, Nelson House had the pleasure of welcoming Commodore Jake Moores, Commanding Officer Britannia Royal Naval College, to Welbeck to celebrate their Fifth Trafalgar Night Mess Dinner.
After weeks of planning and preparation by the able Joshua Warne, all the plans began to fall into place for what turned out to be an excellent evening. With the Unwin Hall transformed into a traditional Mess, the students dressed in their finest and the guests all in attendance, the night was able to start.
A delicious four course meal was served, followed by the Toasts and Speeches. Commodore Moores’ speech was humorous and captivating as he talked about the importance of those in the ranks below you, and the importance of seeing that there is so much more to life than just what you see in front of you. He gave us many ideas to think about and take forward into our future careers, and really captured the spirit of Lord Admiral Nelson that can be seen throughout the Royal Navy to this day.
Traditional Mess rules were followed, or attempted at least, throughout the evening resulting in forfeits for those who struggled to follow such rules. Some were left without chairs after the short break in the evening after they left their napkin on their chairs. Forfeits included a special one for our own Housemaster who was made to sing for his sins, after failing to stop eating after his female guest stopped eating.
After the formal meal, the house split into tutor groups for the much anticipated Mess Games. No one sat out as piggy back races commenced followed by the tug of war. Even the Commodore himself was not allowed to stand by and watch as he spun in circles around a broom handle and tried to walk in a straight line afterwards!
The night was a great success, and thanks must go to the Catering Staff, our House staff and most of all to Joshua Warne and his team who put many hours of hard work into ensuring the evening ran smoothly.
