Portland House Dinner (February 2007)
Quorn Hotel
From the moment the first email was sent, confirming that Portland was going to have their house meal, excitement captured the house. The girls started to get excited and within the house all conversations were drawn towards what dresses people were wearing and how they were having their hair. The boys on the other hand seemed calm and collected wondering what all the fuss was about! But we all know that secretly they were worrying over which bow-tie to wear and whether or not to wear a waistcoat!
After what seemed like forever, the day finally arrived and everybody was counting down the hours through lessons, eagerly awaiting 19.30 hours when we were all due to depart from the college.
After assembling in the common room for a light tea of sandwiches and juice everyone proceeded to their rooms to begin getting dressed. After a short while the common room again became a hive of activity with the boys in their dinner suits and the girls in their cocktail dresses. A mass of people collected around the chocolate fountain all trying their up most not to spill it down their outfits. Unfortunately, some where unsuccessful at this but after a little hard work, a spare shirt was found, stains were removed and the panic settled.
Following a short journey on the coach to the hotel everyone gathered around trying to find their table and who they would be sitting next to. Taking to their seats the food was promptly served; a delightful array of fruit and mascarpone for starter followed by chicken, and a vegetable tart for the vegetarians amongst the house, all finished off with profiteroles. The traditional coffee and petis fours followed and then it was onto the speeches.
House Master Mr Clarke opened the speeches followed by Head of House, William Wingfield, with a run down of the houses achievements so far and how he had forgotten to introduce Keiren as his deputy on the first day the 06E started. His speech was followed by an interesting talk by the guest of honour Mr Banks (senior member of the MOD) and then the focus was drawn towards the Master of Ceremonies for the evening Kayleigh Jones who ended the speeches with a toast to the queen.
The evening proceeded with a disco that was greatly enjoyed by all, not just the students! Energies were high, the boys were sweaty but everyone was having a good time.
After retiring to the coaches and back to college everyone was gathered in the common room where headcount was taken. Students then advanced to their room where, despite having such a great night, everyone was happy to see their beds!
