Schools Prom (November 2009)
On Wednesday 11th November, 3 members of staff and 50 students all awoke early to travel to London for a day of shopping and to attend the Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. After a hasty breakfast we congregated in the Quorum to await the arrival of the coach. There was lots of talking and gossiping as we all clambered onto the coach, and everyone was in a really good mood because firstly, it was a day of shopping and secondly, it was my birthday so it was a double celebration!
We were scheduled to arrive in London by 1100 so that we could attend the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph, but due to bad traffic we were delayed in getting to the tube station to get into central London. There were some other students on the train, and one of them asked if we could all have 2 minutes silence at 1100. Apart from one woman in the compartment who was making a phone call, the rest of us were respectfully silent. We arrived at Westminster Tube Station at 1115 and made our way to the Cenotaph and the Fields of Remembrance, before splitting into groups to do some shopping and have lunch.
Later, we all met at the station and caught a train to South Kensington where we had time to visit the museums and have something to eat before meeting at 1830 outside the Royal Albert Hall. The staff met us there with our tickets and we took our places, standing in front of the stage, chatting and waiting for the concert to start. Eventually the concert started, and the music played was a mix of classical, new work, modern and compositions by some band masters. The concert finished at 2230, after which we had to find our way back to the tube station and then board the coach to arrive back at Welbeck at 0130, very tired and reluctant to get up at 0630 to catch up on prep and missed lessons!
I really enjoyed myself, and I am ready to put my name down immediately for next year’s trip!
