Cross Country
In the spring term, cross country running is a major sport for boys and girls, with training taking place on Wednesdays and Saturdays on the College grounds, the nearby 'Outwoods' park and Beacon Hill park, and also on our College run course. At the beginning of the season there is a training schedule which works on a speed, endurance and hill training, involving a variety of interval sessions. Training is the same for everyone, but takes place in four groups according to ability, each group has a member of staff running the session. A few weeks into the term, the races begin, with the majority in a League against Independent schools in the East Midlands. Welbeck usually do very well in the league, partly because we have runners with natural talent, but also because the variety of training we undertake throughout the season prepares us well for the races. For some 'elite' athletes there is the chance to run in the Leicestershire league races towards the end of the autumn term, in preparation for larger county races at the end of the season. At the very end of the term the whole College competes in the 'College run', which is an inter-house event in which the whole student body (and several staff) run the College course. This is a really enjoyable afternoon, and is the only inter-house competition which involves every student. |
