Leicestershire Schools’ County Championships (June 2010)
On the morning of the 12th June, the Welbeck Athletics Team travelled to Saffron Lane for the Leicestershire Schools’ County Championships 2010. With Welbeck traditionally being a Rugby orientated College, the team arrived at Saffron Lane not expecting great things. However, with the tenacity of the typical Welbeck student, every athlete put their body on the line nonetheless.
The day commenced with Will Couch running in a hotly contested Senior Boys 100m. Will went into the race with the knowledge that it would be very close. After a flying first 60m, Marcel Hodge (undisputed Leicestershire County Champion 2 years running) closed the gap and out strided Will in the last 15m of the race to beat him marginally, both of them achieving a time of 11.2 seconds, qualifying for English Schools.
Following this were the 400m and 200m with Welbeck students performing well in their own standards in these tough events. Joanne Ellet achieved a Bronze in the 400m Senior Girls and Charlotte Pickles achieved a Bronze in the 200m Senior Girls.
The next race was the much anticipated 3000m being run by David O’Connell who was hoping to perform a Personal Best. He went into the race with a clear game plan, however once the first bend had been cleared the plan went out of the window and he just ran his own race which depended solely on the standard of the other athletes. David managed to finish with a very respectable time of 9 minutes and 34 seconds which secured his 1st place. Other results on the track included Dan Phillips and Will Hope finishing in 4th and 5th place in the 200m, Adam Mabbott finishing in 4th place in a tough 400m race and Jake Bradley securing a Bronze in the 1500m. A harsh lesson was learnt by Kevin McCool in the 800m - despite running a brilliant race he was disqualified for breaking too early.
4x100m relays were organised on the day when all of the North Leicestershire team came together for the first time. The Senior Girls ran the race with a very solid first leg, finishing 1st with a time of 53.1 seconds. The Senior Boys team smashed the opposition and also the County record despite the fact that the last leg was ran slower than all three previous legs. The team finished with a time of 45.3 seconds. Welbeck representatives in the Girls relay were Joanne Ellet and Charlotte Pickles and in the Boys relay Will Couch and Will Hope.
All throughout the day field events were also taking place across the stadium. Joel Beckett competed in the Shotput where he threw a 10.45m to secure 2nd place. Another good performance came from Vanessa Fields who came 2nd in the Javelin with a throw of 26m. Sophie Foskett also achieved a 2nd place in the Discus with a throw of 17.94m. However the best result came from Sean Hudson who achieved 1st place in the Senior Boys Triple Jump with a distance of 11.84m. 3rd places were secured by Matt Mower in the Senior Discus and Sean Gibbons in the Long Jump.
Congratulations to everyone who made it such a proud day for Welbeck College with the number of medals won. Special thanks go to Ma’am Hawkins, Mr Blackledge and Mr Armstrong for coaching us and helping throughout the season and making such a medal haul at the County Champs possible. Thank you also to Rebecca Gowler, Katy Shakespeare, Lorren Clark and Leah Bertram who gave up their day to help officiate at the event.
Will Couch and Charlotte Pickles, Nelson 09E
