The College Run 2011
Wednesday 11th May was the day of this year’s annual 4.1 mile College Run in which every able member of the College takes part in a timed long distance run across varying terrain, ranging from the College sports field to country tracks. It provides an opportunity for those with an ability to run long distances to shine.
This year saw every student bearing their colours in the form of House vests, with some opting to wear coloured headbands and body paints as well. Prior to the event each House conducted its own 20 minute warm up session in order to prepare for the long run ahead.
Every member of the College was involved with the run in some way or another – students currently sustaining injuries acted as marshals while the students who were able ran the race. A number of staff members also chose to take part.
With the weather being quite cold, but perfect for running, the 74 girls lined up taking an eager foot forward. The marshals were in position, the starting gun was sounded and they were off. Some 10 minutes later the 188 boys, plus Staff and guest runners, set off.
The girls’ House match was keenly contested between Portland, who had the first two home, and Nelson who had strength in depth. Holly Kirkham won by a distance for the girls in a new record time of 32:00 with Josie Lockwood second and Hannah Wright (Nelson) third. With their 8th runner in 24th place Nelson were the winning team.
The boys’ race was dominated by David O’Connell (Stirling) who won in a time of 26:30, with Guy Whittaker (Portland) second and Dominic Drew third. The House match was again a battle between two teams, this time Portland who had the better overall squad and Alanbrooke who had 5 of their team finishing in the top 10. Portland were the victors.
Although not counting in the team race, there were excellent runs from ‘guest’ runners QMSI Pyburn (5th), Lucy Crookes (7th in the boys' race) and VPP Mr Crookes (14th).
On behalf of the students we would like to thank Mr Hardern for organising such a successful and exciting event which is one of the highlights of the inter-House competition calendar.
