Hockey
Welbeck Hockey is a relatively new sport to the college, but is really starting to thrive at the new College. The facilities are superb and the astro turf has really aided the development of the sport, playing and practicing on a quality surface. Girls hockey is run in the Autumn term, with the boys in the Spring term. We have a very busy schedule during these terms playing a lot of fixtures against some very well developed hockey schools such as Repton, Oakham and Uppingham, as well as entering county competitions at the U18’s category. We have some strong links with the county set up and more of our students are given the opportunity to represent at that level. We are lucky to be so close to Leicester as Leicester Ladies hockey club have a very good pedigree for success, winning the European Cup on numerous occasions. This has meant we have been able to get coaching from some of their players including Helen Richardson (England and GB, 2004-Present). The boys are equally lucky with Loughborough University being so close and there men’s team being in the top three in the country, and the college is continually making links with them. Training is a hard but rewarding experience, few people outside the game realise how technical a game it is and how fit you need to be! Something our specialist coaching team work on continuously, once you have been part of the Welbeck hockey teams you’ll never forget the fitness sessions! The college has hosted hockey teams from overseas in the past and hopefully something we will continue to do in the future, as well as planning tours for our own teams. Our reputation in the sport is growing and we are going from strength to strength. Any student can play the sport at college, no matter what experience you have in the past, and all students enjoy the experience. |
