Sports

Sport plays a very big part in College life, and we endeavour to provide top quality coaching and match play in as wide a range of activities as possible. All students have major games on Monday and Saturday afternoons, choosing one activity to follow for each of the three terms. All students must take a major team game during at least one of the three terms. In addition, several other sports are pursued as General Activities on Thursday afternoons, or as co-curricular activities outside normal curriculum time. We play many competitive fixtures against the top schools in the Midlands, and have notable successes in several competitions, both at local County and National level.

In order to succeed and get the best out of Welbeck and the DTUS university years students need to follow a progressive Basic Fitness Assessment programme which allows them to improve their basic fitness as they move through the college. The basic requirements of this Fitness Assesment programme can be found on our Physical Fitness Requirements page.

At the end of every Summer Term, we hold our annual Sports Awards Presentation Dinners. At these, awards are made to the "Player of the Season" and "Most Improved Player" for each of our teams in all sports.

Almost 90% of students have represented the College in at least one competitive match against other schools over the course of the year, so lots of people are in with a chance of winning an award.

The teacher in charge of each sport also makes a short speech outlining the successes, highs and lows of the year. The evening culminates with the very prestigious awards of Sportsman and Sportswoman of the year.
