Welbeck Rugby - 2009/10 Season Review
2009/10 proved to be an excellent season for Welbeck rugby, 6 fully committed teams playing 51 matches gaining victory in more than half. The lower teams gained invaluable experience and the year 12’s have the opportunity to move up the teams next year. The 1st and 2nd XV won two thirds of their matches in a very eventful season. We had exciting cup runs the 2nd XV won the county plate with an emphatic victory over King Edwards Melton in the final. The 1st XV also did incredibly well in reaching the semi final of both the Daily Mail Vase and County Cup involving nail biting victories and heartbreaking defeats.
The 1st XV’s success was largely built on the success of their forwards in particular the considerable front row of Beechey, Creedy and Mayes who were integral in our signature move the catch and drive or the 'pain train' as it became known. Behind the scrum the backs occasionally sprung into life especially the elusive Will Reeve but for the most part just defended manfully. The team only conceded one try per game on average, which always ensured we were hard to beat.
Highlights were an opening victory over Nottingham High School and the battle in the blizzard as we thrashed Manchester Grammar school 10 – 10 in the ¼ final of the Daily Mail Vase! Lowlights were a hammering at Oundle and our cup exits of course.
Generally this was a hugely enjoyable season where boys became men and great friendships were formed. The team played with great spirit and togetherness and this really helped the team and it’s individuals to reach their potential. Hopefully next season if we recapture this formula of great leadership and whole squad dedication we can take it one step further.
