Leicestershire County Plate Final (April 2010)
On Thursday 29th April the Welbeck 2nd XV finally managed to take part in the postponed Leicestershire U18 Plate Final. After arriving at Leicestershire Lions Rugby Club we proceeded to mentally prepare ourselves for the forthcoming match by talking through our tactics in the changing rooms, and after a short warm up session from both sides the long awaited match finally began. The game was electric with the ball constantly flying through both teams’ hands from one sideline to the other. King Edwards, who had an imposing pack, nudged a try from a catch and drive then kicked a penalty to take the lead of 8-0 after twenty minutes. Fortunately only a few minutes later Will Couch ran in a blistering try down the left wing. This was converted and the score at half time was 8-7 to King Edwards. Nail biting stuff!
During the second half King Edwards scored another converted try, leaving Welbeck 15-7 down and almost shattering our hopes of winning silver. However we continued to counter-attack and our fitness began to pay off. It wasn’t long before Will Couch again managed to run around their entire back line and score another try. This was converted so the score was now 15-14 to King Edwards. The match was now approaching the end and with only five minutes left, after missing some close chances to score, we were still losing. However with a mere three minutes left Ryan Walter kicked a high ball over the opposition’s defence and Will Couch ran on to catch the ball and score his hat trick under the posts. Three more minutes of frantic play then followed, after which an extremely exhausted and completely exhilarated 2nd team collapsed on the pitch, winning the County Plate Final 19-15.
